How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

At the Aston Martin Houston service center, “how often should you rotate your tires?” is a common question we receive. Whether you’re cruising through San Antonio in a luxury sportscar or a standard sedan or SUV, it’s crucial that you know how many miles to rotate the tires on your vehicle. The blanket interval given to most vehicles is 5,000-7,500 miles. However, you should consult your owner’s manual for the most reliable, model-specific interval. Learn more about tire rotation with us in the guide below!

How Many Miles to Rotate Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Does your vehicle have front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD)? Either way, the general guideline of 5,000-7,500 miles will apply. Of course, if your owner’s manual says otherwise, you should stick to that information.

FWD and RWD indicate where engine power is directed; to the front wheels or to the rear wheels, respectively. The drivetrain your vehicle uses will tell you which tires are going to wear out the fastest. Here are some additional tips and important information to keep in mind:

  • There are different tire rotation patterns for different drivetrains. On a FWD vehicle, the rear tires switch sides when they move to the front, but the front tires can stay on the same side when moving to the rear. In simpler terms, the rear right tire goes to the front left, and the rear left tire goes to the front right.
  • On a RWD vehicle, the front right tire should move to the rear left position, and the front left tire should move to the rear right position. The rear tires can stay on the same side when they move to the front.
  • Consider your driving habits in Sugarland and The Woodlands. Commercial use and off-roading are two common examples that would require one to rotate their tires more often. Don’t hesitate to ask an expert if you’re unsure of how your own driving might affect your rotation schedule.

When to Rotate Tires on an AWD Vehicle

Need to know how many miles to rotate tires for an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle? Many experts say you should rotate your tires more frequently: about every 3,000-5,000 miles. Again, your owner’s manual will contain a more precise interval in the maintenance schedule.

Is Tire Rotation Really That Important?

Absolutely! You might not think it’s doing much, but tire rotation is an essential part of your car’s maintenance. It helps ensure your tires wear out at equal rates, and that they don’t lose all of their treads prematurely. Regular tire rotation also helps with the following:

  • Provides better traction on slick road surfaces
  • Prevents excessive road-noise, especially at highway speeds
  • Alleviates strain on the drivetrain

Rainy, slick roads are common in Houston, and we’ve even seen a rogue snow day or two. Rotating your tires regularly can help keep your tire tread intact, providing better traction to keep yourself and other drivers safe during inclement conditions.
