Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

Adding oil to engine

Routinely having your oil checked and changed is essential to upholding a proper Aston Martin maintenance schedule. But when it does, in fact, come time for an oil change, should you use synthetic oil or conventional (“regular”) oil? Aston Martin vehicles are engineered to the utmost standards of performance and quality, and as such, generally require full synthetic oil in addition to premium gasoline. That said, you should always defer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for exact service recommendations and requirements. Looking for general information about synthetic oil vs. regular oil? We’ve got you covered!

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil, or “regular” oil is a petroleum-based fluid that has been used in internal combustion engines for years. It is refined from crude oil to offer necessary lubrication to an engine and its parts, helping to reduce engine wear and keep things running smoothly.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is petroleum-based like regular oil, but it also provides enhanced lubrication properties and is far more stable. Synthetic oils oxidize less easily than conventional oils, and are alsobetter at retaining protective properties. They’re chemically developed from petrochemicals in intense processes to provide pinpointed properties that make them superior (and also more expensive) than conventional oils. What’s more, synthetic oils:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

Most sports cars and luxury vehicles are finely-tuned and precision-crafted or maximum performance, and as such, their engines often require synthetic oil. Even in vehicles that don’t require it, though, synthetic oil, or even a synthetic-conventional oil blend, can be beneficial to use. Call (713) 868-6831 for details.

Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Oil Blends

Simply put, synthetic oil blends are comprised of part synthetic oil and part conventional oil, which helps to reduce the cost vs. choosing full synthetic oil, but also provides enhanced properties vs. standard conventional oil. Synthetic blends should not, however, be used in vehicles that require synthetic oil.
